Before you take your road test, you must be at least 18 years old.

Possess at least 50 hours of supervised practise driving, at least 15 of which must be done at night (after sunset) and at least 10 in traffic of moderate to heavy density.

To prove you've had the necessary hours of supervised practise driving, bring a completed Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) to the road test (you must present the MV-262 to the licence examiner each time you take a road test). We also advise you to enrol in a driving school or get expert instruction.

Steering: Driving straight ahead, turning, or backing up all require good steering.

Acceleration: Increase speed gradually and smoothly. Avoid racing the engine or making it stall.

Braking: Gently bring the car to a halt. To avoid sudden stops, begin to brake well before your stopping position. Ensure that you stop your car in the appropriate lane.

Clutch/Gears: Make sure your car is in the right gear at all times. Change into the right gear at the right time using either an automatic or a manual transmission without grinding the gears.

Speed: Of course you should follow the speed limit signs, but you should also modify your speed appropriately based on the weather, road, visibility, and traffic circumstances.

Following Distance : Maintain a sufficient gap between your car and those you are following at all times. Use the driver's manual's two-second guideline. In bad weather or low visibility, make sure to increase your following distance.

Markings, signals, and traffic signs: Understand the significance of signs, signals, and pavement markings, and consistently follow them.

Position for stopping: If you have to stop, do so before you get to an intersection. Stop before crossing any crosswalks or stop lines if they are present. After stopping behind the crosswalk, if your view is obstructed, move forward until you can see your route clearly, and then stop again if necessary.

Choosing and positioning a lane: Maintain proper lane selection for your car, especially when making turns.

Communication: Communicate your desired direction to other automobiles and pedestrians. Use your horn or directional signals regularly and as needed.

Observation: Scan the traffic around you for potential issues or hazards, not just in front of you but also behind you and to either side. Regularly check your mirrors, but while changing lanes or backing up, remember to look behind you as well.

Your learners permit will still be valid if you fail your road skills test until the stated expiration date. But, you must renew your permit if it runs out before to your upcoming driving test.

The next road skills test for a New York driver's licence can be scheduled as long as you wait at least a day after failing a test and pay the additional fees (if your first two attempts were unsuccessful).
